I understand you was not talking of software property that time, but
may be confusing sometimes.

Sorry for the time consumption.

Mario, I am not aware that rms has disrecommended terms such as "my program" and "stealing code", even for official GNU packages.  Maybe you should talk it over with him first.

And, to get an account on fencepost, please see http://www.gnu.org/software/README.accounts.html.  You surely qualify!

Agreed (see below).

Cannot you ask GNU for an account at fencepost?

>> in official communications as a GNU maintainer does more harm >> than calling Geiser "my humble attempt at bringing slime to
>> the Scheme world."

> I don't object that pharse.

Well, your advice about code ownership directly followed a quote of that phrase (see comment #21), so i took that advice as a reaction to the later.

> What I do object (As explained above) is "my GNU MDK package"
> and "i'm already stealing some code".

Okay, here's our miscommunication. When i say "my package", i
don't mean "the package whose code i own and will make sure that
nobody else can use", in the same way as i mean nothing of the
sort when i say "my friend" or even "my peach cake recipe".
I just mean "the package i develop and maintain", as (i thought)
one can easily infer from the context.

In the same manner, in the context of our conversation,
the term "stealing", specially when immediately followed by a
smiley, has a well accepted connotation (derived, as you know,
from Picasso's "los buenos artistas copian, los grandes roban").

You may contend that your interpretation of my phrases is more correct than mine, and i agree with you that, under that interpretation, those wouldn't be the best terms to use. I just happen to think that my interpretation is more natural :)

We are having a miscommunication.  I agree you deserve the credit for
your effort in Geiser.  My point is: free software developers are not
the owners of the software they develop, because in free software the
idea of property and ownership is pointless.

A software owner is a individual whose aims to fully controll what
the users do with the software he owns in a propietary manner as
Google do with my mail, as do Microsoft with it operating systems, and
so...  There isn't this types of owners in free software world because
each user can do what he wants with his copy, as it should be.

I'm pretty sure you released Geiser as free software because you want
to give users to have freedom with it, not because you want to have
propietary control over what the users do with their copy of Geiser,
so I don't think "owner" is an appropiate term IMO, I suggest
"developer".

In a similar manner, "stealing" code is

>I could nitpick at you, tear my robes, and say that using an email
>from a proprietary, non-free hosting service

I don't like Gmail at all, but what service should I use instead?.
All the services I know have the same problem as Gmail: They Offers
software as a service, don't gives you privacity and have propietary
JavaScript scripts.  If you know of any than don't have this problem
please tellme :).

>in official communications as a GNU maintainer does more harm than
>calling Geiser "my humble attempt at bringing slime to the Scheme
>world."

I don't object that pharse.  What I do object (As explained above) is
"my GNU MDK package" and "i'm already stealing some code".

So you think that knowing very well GNU's philosophy and not
following or agreeing with every single bit of it is hypocrisy?
I don't. I happen to think that there's nothing wrong with
calling Geiser, which carries my copyright and of which i've
written 95% of the code, my project. That's the way i feel about
it. Pretending that i think otherwise would be dishonest.

I could nitpick at you, tear my robes, and say that using an
email from a proprietary, non-free hosting service in official
communications as a GNU maintainer does more harm than calling
Geiser "my humble attempt at bringing slime to the Scheme
world." But i wouldn't call you an hypocrite for that. I think
that your hard work as a Savannah maintainer, which i greatly
appreciate, speaks much better than all that about your
commitment to the GNU project.

Thanks.

So, you mean you know very well the GNU philosphy and advices, but you
don't follow it outside GNU?.

Honestly, I think is a bit of hipocristy.  The GNU philosophy apply to
all software in the very same manner.  Just most GNU mantainers are
concerned about the GNU advices, but this don't imply than is good
when mantainers of non-GNU software tryies to own the software.

I mean: You are not enforced to care about GNU philosophy to host a
project in GNU Savannah, you just have to follow the requirements
(https://savannah.gnu.org/register/requirements.php).  However, it
would be a good act of courtesy if you help us to spread our ideas of
software freedom by using the appropiate terms.  Apart of whether you
use, or you don't use any GNU software/service we ask you to help
spreading our ideas :).

Good luck.

i'm referring to the problem that trying to visit geiser's homepage at savannah, www.nongnu.org/geiser, returns a server error to the effect that the page doesn't exist, while i have activated the feature and actually committed an index.html page to the web CVS report.

I haven't received any mail, but i more or less know how to use Savannah. I've already added the note at Gitorious, and i will probably eventually delete the project there after some months.

I'm a long time slime user, and actually Geiser is my humble attempt to bring its nice features to the Scheme world. And yes, i'm already stealing some code :) Thanks for the pointer anyway.

A last question: should i monitor the savannah-hackers mailing list (if it's public) to know the status of my problem with Geiser's homepage here at Savannah?

I agree with Sylvain. FWIW, my GNU MDK package was, during several years, hosted both in Savannah and SourceForge (these days it's only here), and nobody ever found that a problem.

Anyway, i'm not deleting Geiser's source from Gitorious. If that means that Geiser cannot be hosted by Savannah, so be it. No hard feelings!

I mean:

This project (Or any other) can be mirrored on any site than do speak
of free software, as GNU Savannah does.

However, not in gitorious because:

*Savannah-hosted projects can't call themself open source but free
software because savannah aims to promotes free software, not open
 source.

*"Gitorious provides open source infrastructure for hosting open
source projects that use Git" so, this imply all gitorious-hosted
 software call themself open source

*Because of the above, savannah-hosted projects can't be hosted
 gitorious.

The same apply for source forge, and rest open source hosting sites.

GNU Savannah promotes free software as you see.  The problem with
gitorious is than it don't.  gitorious promotes open source.  We want
to spread the ethical values of free software but open source don't
speak of ethics nor morality.  We think Open source misses the point
of free software:
http://www.gnu.org/philosophy/open-source-misses-the-point.html.

Usually mirroring would be a advantage.  But If a project is mirrored
outside savannah, and the mirror don't speaks of freedom, then the
user who looks in the mirror instead of in savannah may will not
notice the existence an philosophy of free software and the GNU
project.

I discourage you to using a hosting site than don't promotes free
software but instead promotes open source software or propietary
software, as gitorious does.  However, when hosting at Savannah is not
only a discouragement but a requirement for the sake of free software.

You may leave a note in gitorious if you wish, as "The Geiser page now
is in GNU Savannah: https://savannah.nongnu.org/p/geiser, A free
software hosting site.".  This will ensure current and future
contributors can still contribute to Geiser.  If there are more
problems with the migration we can talk about them and found a good
solution if you wish.

Of couse, the final choise of use or not to use GNU Savannah is up to
you.  Please let us know of it, taking the above into account :).
