I have included the ZIP. I have now PNGs and not GIFs. If approved, can you please change the name to phpBB Rivals and not phpBb Rivals (the second b should be captial).

Thanks.

Hi,

We did not get a response from you, so we deleted your project from the pending queue.

If you would still like to have your project hosted at Savannah, please register it again.

The re-registration URL found in our acknowledgment of your earlier registration will direct
you to the proper location where you can re-register your project.

Regards.

Hi,

I am waiting for an answer from you.

If within one week I still do not get a reply, I will remove your project.
You will still be able to register it again once you have the time to deal with the registration issues.

Are you still willing to host your project at Savannah?
If not, please tell us - we don't bite, and it will make us gain time.

Regards.

Hi,

We can't monitor our 2500+ projects, and sometimes projects switch maintainers that do not read carefully the hosting requirements. In such case, we contact them and ask them to remove the gifs. They're not allowed to upload gifs anymore than you do :)

> "Unisys does not require licensing, or fees to be paid, for non-commercial, non-profit GIF-based applications, including those for use on the on-line services."

> This project is freeware, non-profit and non-commercial. How is it you can say that I need to remove them ?

Free software is for "anyone anywhere". This includes commercial purposes.

If your piece of software can only be used for non-commercial purpose, for a reason or another, then it cannot be considered free.

> It is expired in many contries ... i am NOT using the algoritum in my program therefore it does not apply to me. Second, the patent does not apply to me, it is expired in my country (Canada). So, I am allowed to use GIF images in my free project.

There are two points here.

First, you personaly are allowed to use gifs, but that is not true worldwide (this time we lack the "anywhere" part).

Second, we do not generally check for patents infridgements at Savannah, because this would essentially match all projects, and because we don't have the resources to perform such a hugely time consuming job (it takes days to analyse a single patent).

However, the FSF launched a specific campain against GIFs, due to the use of the LWZ patent as an attack (by opposition to a defense). (Admittedly this campain is reaching its end.) So we don't accept GIFs as part of this campain until it has expired worldwide - but that's not true for all patents infridgements.

I hope this explained better our requirement not to use the GIF format. We hope that, you too, will show your disagreement against the existing software patents system, and use the PNG format instead which is free of such patents.

EDIT: On June 20, 2003, the United States patent on the LZW algorithm expired [3], which means that Unisys can no longer collect royalties for use of the GIF format in that country. Those bothered with the patent enforcement dubbed this day GIF Liberation Day. The equivalent patents in Europe and Japan expired on June 18 and June 20, 2004 respectively, with the Canadian patent following on July 7.

IBM has also patented the LZW algorithm, but has never enforced this patent. According to the Free Software Foundation that patent will expire on August 11, 2006 in the United States.

It is expired in many contries ... i am NOT using the algoritum in my program therefore it does not apply to me. Second, the patent does not apply to me, it is expired in my country (Canada). So, I am allowed to use GIF images in my free project.

It is a phpBB MODification ... phpBB software includes the GPL file, therefore I do not need to. My copyright is fine. It's no different then any other phpBB MODs.

Regarding the GIFs, why do you have other projects in the site with GIFs ?

Like: http://cvs.savannah.gnu.org/viewcvs/ganesha/ganesha2/intro/images/
http://cvs.savannah.gnu.org/viewcvs/phpcompta/phpcompta/html/image/

I fail to see how they are allowed to use them and not me.

"Unisys does not require licensing, or fees to be paid, for non-commercial, non-profit GIF-based applications, including those for use on the on-line services."

This project is freeware, non-profit and non-commercial. How is it you can say that I need to remove them ?

Hello.

At first, in order to release your project properly and unambiguously under the GPL,
please place copyright notices and permission-to-copy statements at the beginning of every file of source code.

In addition, if you haven't already, please include a copy of the plain text version of the GPL,
available from http://www.gnu.org/licenses/gpl.txt, into a file named "COPYING".

For more information, see http://www.gnu.org/licenses/gpl-howto.html.

The GPL FAQ explains why these procedures must be followed.
To learn why a copy of the GPL must be included with every copy of the code, for example,
see http://www.gnu.org/licenses/gpl-faq.html#WhyMustIInclude.

At second, please remove GIF image files from your project and replace them with an other format (such as PNG or JPEG).

Because of the patents (Unisys and IBM) covering the LZW compression algorithm which are used when making GIF files,
it's impossible to have free software to generate proper GIFs.  These patents also apply to the compress program.

For more information, see http://www.gnu.org/philosophy/gif.html.

Please include in the directory of the images a README file and include there copyright+license notices. See also http://www.gnu.org/prep/maintain/html_node/Copyright-Notices.html

Hi,
I'm evaluating the project you submitted for approval in Savannah.

Please include a (perhaps temporary) URL pointing to the source code.
The description you gave when registering will not be read by the general public.
If you are still concerned with privacy, however, you can forward the code to me by email.

The first URI of you is 404-compatible, and the second runs in a timeout - how funny....

We wish to review your source code, even if it is not functional, to catch potential legal issues early.

For example, to release your program properly under the GPL you must include a copyright notice and
permission-to-copy statements at the beginning of every file of source code.  This is explained in
http://www.gnu.org/licenses/gpl-howto.html.  Our review would help catch potential omissions such as these.
