I put the file COPYING into the web repository. There is now a file COPYING in the source repository, too.

Sure. But I cannot find it nevertheless. :-/

I guess you mean "http://savannah.nongnu.org/cgi-bin/viewcvs/esp/ESP/"?

I've put the COPYING file into the root of the CVS directory.
In what directory are you expecting to find the file?
It will also be part of any source code distribution.

All right, but your project still lack a COPYING file.

Dolphin is a web browser that shares code with the ESP library I checked in: http://dolphin.sourceforge.org/.
The browser is under GPL (at least the parts I wrote but I do plan to use Apache libraries).
The browser is not and will not be part of the ESP project and the dolphin directory probably came into existance when code was renamed .
The library has one or two references to classes or methods that are not available in GNU Classpath yet. This will either be fixed by GNU Classpath or I will make the required changes, if necessary.

Hello again.

Sorry I thought of "Delphi"(tm?). ;-)

Nevertheless did you determine whether your project can run on a Free Software Java suite
(see http://www.gnu.org/software/java/ for more information)?

We recommend you to test your project using GCJ and GNU Classpath, and ensure that your Java code runs on this Free Software Java suite.

GCJ is the GNU Compiler for Java, part of the GCC (GNU Compiler Collection).
The Classpath project aims to develop a free and portable implementation of the Java API
(the classes in the 'java' package).

More information is available at http://gcc.gnu.org/ and http://www.gnu.org/software/classpath/ .

Please provide us with more information about this point.

Hello.

I saw a "dolphin" directory in your CVS repository. Do you use/need Dolphin as an IDE (Integrated Development Environment)?

Please notice that Dolphin is proprietary software. So you cannot link a GPL project to it.

Can you please clarify it? Beside this I guess "Dolphin" is a trademark nevertheless, so I think you shouldn't use it in your project.

Hello.

The address of the FSF has changed, and is now:

51 Franklin Street, Fifth Floor, Boston, MA  02110-1301  USA

Please update your license notices.

You can find some background and a possible migration script at https://savannah.gnu.org/forum/forum.php?forum_id=3766

In addition, please include a copy of the plain text version of the GPL, available from http://www.gnu.org/licenses/gpl.txt, into a file named "COPYING".

We would like to keep your project back. Please tell us when you are ready with the "redesigning" and the RFC, so that we can have a look at your source code then again.

Regards,

Sebastian Wieseler <kickino>

The significant part of the project is currently only
this file: http://www.nongnu.org/esp/esp.xsd.gz

There are some Java sources in the CVS repository but this is only
a library to be used for a reference implementation of ESP.

The status of the project is "specification phase" as I still
consider to submit a RFC to the IETF prior to working on the reference implementation. Any feedback on the specification might
save a lot of time I might have to spend on redesigning a reference implementation.

Hello.

We would like to review your source code.

The address of the FSF has changed, and is now:

51 Franklin Street, Fifth Floor, Boston, MA  02110-1301  USA

Please update your license notices.

Updates versions of the GPL, LGPL and GFDL can also be found at:
http://www.gnu.org/licenses/gpl.txt
http://www.gnu.org/licenses/lgpl.txt
http://www.gnu.org/licenses/fdl.txt

Please update the copy of the license (usually, the 'COPYING' file) in your package as well.

You can find some background and a possible migration script at https://savannah.gnu.org/forum/forum.php?forum_id=3766

And please tell us about the current status of your project.

Hello Sylvain,

no, what I'm doing is that I'm linking GPL code written by me to Apache and other public code and I grant myself a pardon from GPL in case of license incompatibility. I do not grant that
pardon to others in general. The result is a codebase that cannot be used to write derived code unless the redistributor either receives a permission from me to drop GPL, a permission from
the other authors to merge their code under the GPL or he or she rewrites either my code or the other code.

My reason is that I prefer to write GPL code but I'm going to include code that is not under GPL into my project. This project is, however, hosted on sourceforge, not on savannah.gnu.org.

The project, however, you have approved will consist only of GPL and LGPL coce.

Thank you for your comments, I'm sure I want this project to be entirely free software as defined by the FSF.

Bernhard

Hello,

I approved your project and will be keeping this tracker item open until the code is reviewed.

Although this is not relate to this project, regarding the "Mixed Pickles License 1.0" though, what you are doing is basically dual licensing your code with an Expat-like (permissive) license, right? If not, maybe we would need to discuss this a bit more, just in case you intend to do something similar with this very project.

I would also make 2 general remarks:
- We recommende to avoid writing custom license. In this case I think it would be best to stick with a verbatim copy of the modified BSD or the Expat (http://www.jclark.com/xml/copying.txt) license.
- The OSI is more laxist than the FSF is regarding licenses, there are a couple of them that we consider non-free. Be sure of what you want when you refer to "open source licenses"

Yes, I agree with the conditions for hosting this project on savannah.

All source files I am going to submit to savannah were written by myself and begin with a GPL or LGPL comment.

All dependencies the project is going to have are GPL programs.

Some of the code of the project is shared with the Dolphin Web Browser (http://dolphin.sourceforge.net/) which is under GPL as far as the code was written by me but contains some Apache licensed code and some code under a public domain license statement.
That is why the executable license for Dolphin is this one:
http://dolphin.sourceforge.net/mpl/index.html
This code is, however, not going to be submitted to savannah, only some of the GPL licensed classes need to be duplicated.

The ESP project is mostly about creating a specification, an RFC and a reference implementation. Specification and RFC will be made available under the GNU Documentation License and the
source code will be made available under GPL.

Early examples for the protocol can be found at:
http://berg.sourceforge.net/esp/

Hi,

I'm evaluating the project you submitted for approval in Savannah.

Note that Savannah supports projects of the Free Software movement, not projects of the Open Source movement.

We are careful about ethical issues and insist on producing software that is not dependent on proprietary software.

While Open Source as defined by its founders means something pretty close to Free Software, it's frequently misunderstood.  For more information, please see http://www.gnu.org/philosophy/free-software-for-freedom.html.

Your projects meets the Savannah requirements, except that we cannot review your source code yet.

We can approve it, and review the code in the near future (or better, at your request). We will among other check if the source files contain appropriate copyright notice and permission-to-copy statements at the beginning of every file of source code. Our review would help catch potential legal issues early.

If then the source code does not meet our requirements (for example, non-free dependencies), we will then discuss the issue and possibly remove the project from Savannah.

Is this ok for you?

A preliminary page can be found at http://berg.sourceforge.net/esp/, but I'd prefer this project to be hosted on savannah.gnu.org.

The next step of the specification will be an RFC Draft.

Description:
------------
An ethics-enabled search engine can act as a complement to the well-known price search engines and turn ethical considerations into an easily advertisable advantage. A search engine can store imprint and ethics of organizations that publish them and allow users to find organizations adhering to the desired ethics and also to verify these ethics or the public feedback of organizations or individuals that verify those ethics and an organization's adherance to its ethics in detail.

Users of this system can demand ethics and support non-government organization that try to uphold environmental, social or other ethics. Gathering data from user profiles is expected from search engines as users specify the ethics they are looking for and the policy providers, certification agents and verification agents they would like to see.

A search engine must return hits according to the quality of matching ethics, if no other criteria was specified to supercede this.

Unsatisfied users can post tickets in a well-defined format to policy providers or verification agents to remind policy implementors to adhere to the ethics they have published. Policy providers and verification agents can declare a published ethics.xml document as invalid. Mediators can be used to mediate in case of dispute.

Policies can implement policy schemes (inherting the structure of an empty policy) or extend another policy that has not been declared final. A final policy is not open to be extended. Extending a policy means that paragraphs can be overridden or appended. The described inheritance is similar to inheritance in the Java language.

Policies should be structured to describe concisely what is required by a policy, not why it is required or how it is to be implemented. It should be considered good style to add links to external web pages describing the why and how to every paragraph that requires further explanations. Explanations should preferrably come in different degrees of verbosity and sophistication but aim to explain the connection to Kant's Categorical Imperative.

  Motivation

Teaching ethics properly in school, while this is wise to do, is of limited use when people in their everyday life do not get a chance to uphold ethical standards. It is easy to ignore or forget things that cannot be (easily) applied to your daily live. Many religious ethics offer examples for this kind of problem: Demands that are too difficult to apply and while they sound nice they somehow do not apply to your daily life.

Most of us are today surrounded by offers of unknown ethical quality. The verification of production standards is often impossible and where governmental or third party standards exist there is a strong tendency to undermine these standards by discount outlets. One problem is that consumers seldom get the chance to communicate ethical requirements because the proper communication channels does not exist and many producers prefer to measure consumer preferences with a one dimensional scale, the sales.

This project has the goal to offer an open source specification and implementation for that missing communication channel.
