There is now some support for packages supporting --prefix only (and not DESTDIR), but its use is discouraged (requires --force on the command line, or a confirmation in the GUI).
This works by redirecting prefix, so it does not work with packages with broken prefix handling (for example, packages which substitute prefix directly in the generated Makefile).
