Thanks for the analysis.

> So this was a temporary Cox issue it seems

Yes, and their mailserver has been unstable recently;
often it's completely unreachable.

It has stopped, at least for now. If it happens again,
your explanation gives me the insight I need to pursue
it with cox. Thanks again.

For the record:

Looking now...

It all runs with the same timestamp and msg id's until it gets handed off to cox's mailservers.... looking at the maillogs... Cox's mail servers are not following SMTP... they're not providing a 220 to state that the message was accepted for delivery.... the smtp connections time out, and lists' mail server tries again... it appears they got this fixed...

So this was a temporary Cox issue it seems... if this problem persists, please let me know and I'll test further...

Ok, good.

Thanks for looking into this. The problem stopped right
after I had filed this report. Perhaps that's because I
wrote to the postmaster at gmail.com, the originating
site, although they never wrote back. Or perhaps it's
because the sender deleted the email from gmail.com .

Anyway, attached are full headers of the first and last of
sixteen copies of this email, just in case you or the
gnu.org administrator see something there.

Do you still experience this issue?

From what you describe Mailman is not the cause of this problem (and there's no request for -email is unavailable- in .../mailman/data).

I ask -email is unavailable- to have a look at this in case there's a problem with our mail queue.

Can you attach the mail headers to this item?

As <lmi-owner@nongnu.org> I've received sixteen copies
of this same email since last night
  Message-ID: <mailman.5566.1139359112.3143.lmi@nongnu.org>
all with its 1.7-megabyte attachment. I've asked the sender
to do anything he can to stop it, but as far as I can tell
he only sent it once.

Reading the headers from the bottom up, they seem identical
(including timestamps) up to the point where the email
leaves lists.gnu.org .

Last night, I used
  http://lists.nongnu.org/mailman/admindb/lmi
to purge all held email, which now says "There are no
pending requests" when I reload it; yet I've received at
least five copies of this email since I did that.

I haven't changed mailman settings recently; it's configured
to filter aggressively and accept only 'text/plain'.
