I looked into this a bit more, and it turns out I was wrong, it's not easy.  autoreconf doesn't currently have the ability to try multiple names for any tool, and adding that ability would be enough of a change that I think it had best wait for 2.73.

Actually this should be easy.

Not going to happen for the next release, but the MacPorts example is sufficient reason to think it is a desirable feature.  The change we would make is to try 'glibtoolize' first and then 'libtoolize' if that doesn't exist.

So, this is probably my fault as a user, but I can say that this can particularly cause problems because I have an unprefixed version of libtoolize installed elsewhere, but MacPorts comes first in my PATH, so if I forget to pass LIBTOOLIZE=glibtoolize in the environment, I sometimes end up with libtool version mismatch errors

2.61 was a long time ago.  I'm wondering if Gentoo still ships 'glibtoolize' and not 'libtoolize'.  If it doesn't, this change is only weakly motivated.

Note that one can set the environment variable LIBTOOLIZE to override the name of libtoolize at runtime (and likewise for all the tools autoreconf runs).

Circa autoconf 2.61, Gentoo started carrying a patch to autoreconf that changes the default name for the libtoolize helper program from 'libtoolize' to 'glibtoolize'.

An unconditional change is not appropriate for upstream, but it might be reasonable to make autoreconf try both names for that helper program.  However, to do that cleanly would require a lot of surgery, and then should we support a 'g' prefix on all the tools?

Revisit after 2.70.
