You could write a function named `..' and have it take an argument that tells you how to manipulate $PWD, then feed the result to `cd'.

This seems easy enough to implement without making it a builtin.

shopt -s  by itself is meaningless, what shell option are you setting?

Unfortunately, I don't see a way to implement this AND have shopt -s turned on.

It seems like a cool feature, but I can't see a way to implement it without modifying the bash shell.
