GNU tar - Summary
This software is part of the GNU Project.
GNU Tar is an archiver program. It is used to create and manipulate files that are actually collections of many other files; the program provides users with an organized and systematic method of controlling a large amount of data.
Despite its name, that is an acronym of "tape archiver", GNU Tar is able to direct its output to any available devices, files or other programs, it may as well access remote devices or files.
The main areas of usage for GNU Tar are: storage, backup and transportation.

Version 1.34 of GNU tar is available for download (see the download directory for archives in other formats). This version fixes the following bugs:

Version 1.33 of GNU tar is available for download. Summary of changes in this version:
- POSIX extended format headers do not include PID by default.
- --delay-directory-restore works for archives with reversed member ordering.

GNU tar version 1.32 is available for download.

Version 1.31 is available for download. New in this release:
