GNU RCS - Summary
This software is part of the GNU Project.
The GNU Revision Control System is a set of programs that manages multiple revisions of a file (or set of files, with some scripting).
It is the forebear of, and shares the masterfile format (also known as the comma-v format) with, CVS. The programs are:
- ci
- co
- ident
- merge
- rcs
- rcsclean
- rcsdiff
- rcsmerge
- rlog
The distribution also includes the program rcsfreeze, which is not normally installed, and manpages for all programs.
RCS 4.3 was written by Walter F. Tichy and released in November 1989 under GPLv1. It was maintained by Paul Eggert through RCS 5.7 (June 1995). The GNU RCS project on Savannah, maintained by Thien-Thi Nguyen through RCS 5.10.1 (February 2022), modernized the codebase and upgraded the license to GPLv3+. The code base is now mature and although maintained, no major further changes are currently planned. Most GNU projects now use Git for version control.
