I'm currently working as a software engineer for a small software shop in Gaithersburg, MD, developing VoIP server software in Java (and some Perl) on the Solaris platform.

I do mostly Perl development, and have been using Perl since the late 90s, when I taught myself the language because I got sick of trying to write text formatting in C++ (which I taught myself back in the early 90s). Text formatting in C++ can be done, but I found I could be twice as productive in Perl -- and when the time came for me to develop some image processing tools, I chose to use Perl and Postgresql because it saved my company tons of money, and I learned how to do web programming on top of that.

I also do C and C++ development, and am especially interested in 3D graphics and rendering. I have been immersing myself in OpenGL and Renderman for about the past year, resurrecting a teenage dream of being a special effects technician. Back then, I was using Super 8 cameras, models on strings and stop motion clay figures. Now, I am using pretty much the latest rendering technology that is available for the hobbyist (i.e., I am using all free software).

Which bring up another passion of mine -- open source and free software. I have been a pretty hardcore Linux user since 1996 and do all of my graphics development with Linux -- in fact, I do all of my development with Linux, except for in my recording studio, which has a Windows XP based digital audio workstation.

Other interests of mine: medieval history, guitar, percussion, exotic instruments like hurdy-gurdies and kanteles, home studio recording, home theater, exotic beer, cheesemaking, cats and the fairer sex (especially my wife).
