Thank you for your contribution 🙂  I reviewed your patch (little formatted):

-  <shortdesc>Interactive              programming environment for numerical computations</shortdesc>
+  <shortdesc>Interactive mathematical programming environment for numerical computations</shortdesc>

-  <shortdesc xml:lang="de">Interaktive               Programmierumgebung für numerische Berechnungen</shortdesc>
+  <shortdesc xml:lang="de">Interaktive mathematische Programmierumgebung für numerische Berechnungen</shortdesc>

I totally agree with your observation, it should be easy to find Octave using the term "math".  For the KDE software center on openSUSE 15.2 this is the case.

In my opinion "mathematical" and "numerical" are redundant in this short sentence.  Was it enough to mention "math" somewhere in the long description?  Is there any documentation about what is necessary for discovery?

A second point is that there are almost two identical files "/octave.doap" and "/etc/icons/org.octave.Octave.appdata.xml".  Do you have information about which one is used by your Linux distribution?  In any case changes should be made to both files.

I recently searched in GNOME Software app using the term "mathe" (German abbreviation, English abbreviation is "math"), looking for a program to explore the spherical coordinate system. Among some non-relevant results, there was a result for a proprietary program, but not for Octave. Only when I took to the web to look for a free program did I discover there is Octave packaged via Flathub. Back to GNOME Software, this time entering "Octave", I indeed got the result and was able to install Octave.

Adding "mathematical" to shortdesc should place Octave in the search results when someone uses the general term "math(e)" and help compete with the proprietary program.

Actually, just tried with "math" (without e) and this time I got Octave among the proprietary program in the results. So not all is lost, though adding the word should improve things for non-English searches. GNOME Software does search the localized shortdesc.
