Dear CTT translators:
Thank you very much for your contribution in the past year.
We have done a good job as always.
1. keep on localizing www.gnu.org to Simplified Chinese
2. help review the new translation of GNU licence: GFDL
3. welcomed several new members, including Jing
4. welcomed several contributors: Ventus Uta, Peaksol, and Chen Jingge
The following is the summary from GNU. Please take you time to read.
Dear GNU translators!
2023 was a very quiet year; the total number of new translations
was four times as low as in 2022, and in terms of size the amount
was twice as low. Most translations were made in the "Simplified"
Chinese and in the Turkish team. A few unmaintained translations
were decommissioned this year, so the total number of translations
didn't grow, for the first time since the start of CVS logs in 2001.
General Statistics
In most working teams, the amount of outdated translations was
unprecedently close to zero. We could only wish more teams were
active; as a result, the average percentage of outdated translations
remained as high as in 2022, and grew slowly.
The table below shows the number and size of newly translated
articles in important directories and typical number of outdated
GNUNified translations throughout the year.

+--------+--------------+-------------+
+--------+--------------+
| total | 25 (554.3Ki) |
+--------+--------------+
For the reference: 2 new articles were added, amounting to 47Ki
(which is considerably less than in 2022); the number of commits
(about 400 changes in approximately 100 English files) was just
a little lower than in 2022.
Orphaned Teams, New and Reformed Teams
No teams were orphaned, and no new teams were established.
Volunteers requested taking over the teams for Esperanto, Punjabi,
Marathi, Indonesian, Brazilian Portuguese, Arabic---in all cases
with little further outcome.
Changes in the Page Regeneration System
GNUN 1.4 was released this year, fixing a few minor bugs, updating
the HTML validation script for new xmllint, supporting localized
URLs in templates, and a configure option to reduce the number
of generated locales used for the sorting feature.
Happy GNU year, and thank you for your contributions!

Dear CTT team:
Thank you very much for you contribution in 2022. There have been a few new comers joining our team, like Wind. Their work is appreciated.
The whole team have been doing a good job in 2022. Here is official letter from GNU.
Dear GNU translators!
This year was relatively quiet; the total number of new translations
was considerably lower than in 2021, especially in terms of size.
Almost two of every three translations were made in the "Simplified"
Chinese team; the Albanian and Turkish teams significantly reduced
the percentage of their outdated translations.
General Statistics
In November, we reached new maximum values of translations per file
in important directories, 9.44 translations per file (0.12 more
than in 2021) and 8.85 translations weighted with size of articles
(0.46 more than in 2021), 50 Mi in 3300 files total.
Meanwhile, the percent of outdated translations was as high
as at the end of 2021 (about twice as high as the historical
minimum in 2014-2015).
The table below shows the number and size of newly translated
articles in important directories and typical number of outdated
GNUNified translations throughout the year.

20 Year ago, May the 28th, GNU Chinese Translators Team was registered at Savannah.
I joined the project from Help GNU. My original intention was to support this project and maybe help myself to understand more of GNU. At that time it was only me who worked actively in translating the GNU web pages into Simplified Chinese. I had even had to approve my own translation which was not the correct approach. I really wanted some other people to join the project like the project creators, and I started to really understand that to be a volunteer in a Free Software project means to be persistent and stubborn.
Gradually we had some newcomers joining the project, like hagb, hahawang, psiace, shankangke, shi, wind, etc. I am very excited whenever there is a newcomer because I know I am the person to let them know the project and I am the person to encourage them contributing their time and talent in this project.
Today, the translation project is going on smoothly. Our progress is often at the top list of all language teams. Thanks to all the Translators. Well, there is still a long way to go because our goal is not only to translate the articles, but also to promote the idea of Free Software for its care of computer users and the community. I do wish our effort is a progressive forward step toward a world where all software is free as in freedom.
Today, GNU CTT is just 20-year young. It is still a baby who need care from all of us. Let's work together to grow it stronger.
Dear Translators, dear free software lovers, dear friends, please light your candles, please wish your wish, please make your contribution to let the world be brighter.
Happy 20th Birthday, GNU CTT.

Dear zh-cn-translators:
Thank you all for the help in 2021. Here comes the summary of www.gnu.org translation from GNU.
Please take your time to read. We are doing almost as good as 2020.
Dear GNU translators!
This year, the total number of new translations was approximately
like in 2020, but their mean size was almost twice as large.
Nearly every third new translation was made in the Brazilian
Portuguese team; the Albanian and ("Traditional") Chinese teams
made four times more translations than in 2020.
General Statistics
In October, we reached new maximum values of translations per file
in important directories, 9.32 translations per file (0.4 more
than in 2020) and 8.39 translations weighted with size of articles
(0.15 more than in 2020).
The percent of outdated translations was considerably higher
than in 2020, mostly due to more commits this year.
The table below shows the number and size of newly translated
articles in important directories (as of 2021-12-31) and
typical number of outdated GNUNified translations throughout
the year.

+--------+----------------+------------+
+--------+----------------+
| total | 163 (3049.8Ki) |
+--------+----------------+
For the reference: 5 new articles were added, amounting to 237Ki
(one of them was proprietary/all.html, about 130Ki, consisting
mostly of entries already present in other pages from proprietary/),
and there were over 1000 changes in about 300 English files
in the important directories.
Like in 2020, few translations were converted to the gettext format,
so that column is missing this year. Among the active teams, only
the ("Traditional") Chinese team has translations to convert
(15 files, 228.6Ki), and the total number of unconverted translations
is 55 (1062.8Ki).
Orphaned Teams, New and Reformed Teams
The ("Traditional") Chinese team changed its leader. The Farsi
team was re-established in May, but no commits in www have followed
yet. Korean, Serbian, Ukrainian teams were declared inactive
(no commits for more than 3 years). The Italian team
is re-organizing.
There were unsuccessful attempts to establish or resurrect teams
for Hindi, Arabic, Malay, Finnish, Catalan.
Changes in the Page Regeneration System
GNUN had two releases this year, 1.1 and 1.2, the most important
changes were in validation procedures: the SSI expansion was made
closer to Apache behavior, the DTD was updated to remove obsolete
elements and add new attributes.
Happy GNU year, and thank you for your contributions!
(I see nothing secret in this message, so if you think it may be
interesting to people who are not subscribed to the list, please
feel free to forward it).
Happy New Year!

Dear FSF,
I write this letter to support Dr. Richard Stallman as a board member of FSF.
Dr. Richard Stallman has been a strong leader in Free Software Movement ever since the beginning of free software. He has been always thinking from the free software point of view, and has been constantly promoting free software and free software community. This is what we need in Free Software Foundation. This is what we need to inspire people to work for the goal of Free Software Foundation.
I am expecting Dr. Richard Stall to do his best in FSF and wish him all the best.

Dear GNU CTT:
Thank you very much for the hard work in the past years.
Wish you all a good, happy and healthy Chinese New Year!
We are proud to know that:
Boston, Massachusetts, USA -- February 9th, 2021 -- The Free Software Foundation (FSF) has been awarded a four-star and 100% rating, the highest possible, from Charity Navigator, the largest independent evaluator of US-based nonprofit charities. The FSF was also selected for Charity Navigator's "Top Ten List" as one of "10 Charities Worth Watching." These designations exemplify the FSF's strong financial health and commitment to accountability and transparency.
Using objective analysis, Charity Navigator awards only the most fiscally responsible organizations a four-star rating, with metrics including governance, ethical practices, operations in accordance with industry best practices, and openness with donors and stakeholders. This is the eighth year in a row the FSF has received a four-star rating, a record attained by only six percent of the 160,000 charities evaluated by Charity Navigator. The FSF also earned perfect scores on "Financial Health" and "Accountability & Transparency," resulting in the organization's first-ever 100% rating, an accomplishment less than one percent of all charities evaluated by Charity Navigator are able to achieve. This is the second time the FSF has placed in the list of "10 Charities Worth Watching."
"The Free Software Foundation's exceptional four-star rating sets it apart from its peers and demonstrates its trustworthiness to the public,” according to Michael Thatcher, President and CEO of Charity Navigator. “Only a quarter of charities rated by Charity Navigator receive the distinction of our four-star rating. This adds the FSF to a preeminent group of charities working to overcome our world’s most pressing challenges. Based on its four-star rating, people can trust that their donations are going to a financially responsible and ethical charity when they decide to support the Free Software Foundation."
FSF executive director, John Sullivan, shared: "This is truly an accomplishment requiring the whole organization's efforts. It reflects excellence by our board of directors in its leadership, especially overseeing the FSF's financial management and key organizational policies, and by our whole staff, doing their work with exceptional efficiency and diligence, focused precisely on the FSF's mission. This is full validation of our supporters' confidence that when you contribute to the FSF, that hard-earned money will substantially advance the cause of software freedom."
The FSF's Charity Navigator profile can be visited at https://www.charitynavigator.org/index.cfm?bay=search.summary&orgid=8557.
Dear www-zh-cn-translators:
Thank you all for the great effort in 2020.
Despite the difficulties from many directions, we as a team have achieved something proudly.
1. This year, the total number of new translations was more than
in 2019. The Turkish team made an impressive progress, both
in terms of new translations and in terms of updating the existing
ones. Other notably good teams are Chinese ("Simplified"),
Spanish and French. The Japanese team considerably reduced
the amount of outdated translations throughout the year.

articles and the translations to convert to the PO format
in important directories (as of 2020-12-31).

Mark your calendars: LibrePlanet 2021: Empowering Users will be held on March 20 and 21, 2021. For those of you who haven't been to the LibrePlanet conference before: expect a friendly, social, community-focused event with two days of inspiring talks and workshops from some of the most active and inspiring people in the free software community.
Participate in LibrePlanet 2021
Submit a session
Just like in 2020, LibrePlanet 2021: Empowering Users will be an online event. We're preparing to translate the enjoyment of real life interaction and catching up with everyone in the community in person to an online event in which we can create a space for people to enjoy talks, interact with other community members, exchange ideas, and get to know organizations through an exhibitor space. In the meantime, if you want to be a speaker at LibrePlanet 2021, you now just have a few more days to submit a session. Submissions will close right after this weekend, Monday at 12:00 EST (17:00 UTC).
Register for the event
Registration for the event will open soon for all attendees. Like for the previous edition, anyone will be able to watch the event online through libreplanet.org/2021. However, if you register for the conference, you will be able to enjoy an added level of participation in the event and with the free software community. For anyone who can spare a bit more, we have a special LibrePlanet 2021 gift waiting as well. Want to receive all the details? Subscribe to the LibrePlanet announcement list via libreplanet.org/2021
Volunteer
Volunteers are essential to help make the event a success, and this doesn't change for an online event. We can't do this without you. Tasks include moderation of IRC chat channels, coordination of program elements, writing, or just bringing us great ideas to make the event even better. If you are interested, please contact resources@fsf.org.
Get excited
If you want to know more about how the event is organized, and how we stream and record the event, fully free and online, you can read more in our blog post about the 2020 edition's technical challenges. You can also browse through the video archive of past LibrePlanet conference sessions on our MediaGoblin instance to get inspired.
Support LibrePlanet by becoming an exhibitor or sponsor
LibrePlanet is organized by the FSF, a 501(c)(3) charity. Your contribution will allow us to create a truly valuable event for many people all over the globe by by funding the equipment and staff time necessary to produce, stream, and document the event using only free software.
We also offer unique opportunities for businesses and other organizations to connect to a community that is dedicated to free software. Early bird pricing for exhibitors starts now, and will be available until February 15th, 2021. For information on how your company can be represented in our virtual exhibit hall, or to further sponsor the LibrePlanet conference, please email campaigns@fsf.org.
We can't wait to welcome you at the event!
best regards,

Dear CTT members:
The High Priority Free Software Projects (HPP) initiative draws attention to areas of improvement to the HPP list and specific projects of great strategic importance to the goal of freedom for all computer users. Longtime committee member Benjamin Mako Hill said previously that an "updated High Priority Projects list is a description of the most important threats, and most critical opportunities, that free software faces in the modern computing landscape." As computing is more ubiquitous than ever, the HPP list must reflect ongoing changes in priorities for the free software movement. The committee is starting the new process of updating the HPP, and we need your input.
We need your input! Send your suggested changes for the list to hpp-feedback@gnu.org by January 8, 2021.
Remember, we're looking for projects of great strategic importance to the goal of freedom for all computer users. We are looking for areas where people feel they are heavily pressured or even required to use proprietary software, as well as for important missing features in existing free software, and for problems you see on the horizon as technology is developing.
If you wish, we encourage you to publish your thoughts independently (e.g., on your blog or social media) and send us a link to them. Keep in mind that not every project of great strategic importance to the goal of freedom for all computer users will be a software development project. We welcome suggestions of other forms of activism, internal or external (e.g., making free software communities safe for diverse participants, mandating use of free software in the public sector, etc.).
Suggestions for the HPP list are always welcome. The committee plans to start processing feedback for this update by January 8, 2021. Based upon the feedback we receive, the current content of the list, and our own contributions, we will publish a substantially revised list and an analysis before holding a lively discussion at LibrePlanet 2021.
Thank you.
This Friday, October 9th, from 12:00 EDT (16:00 UTC) until 17:00 (21:00 UTC), we will host a fun and informative live event with guests from all over the world, to discuss the future of free software and learn from their experiences in different fields driving free software forward. You can find the full program on the FSF Web site, but here are some of the highlights we are looking forward to:
We invited illustrator and artist David Revoy, who also designed our beautiful coral anniversary artwork, to join us and talk about his artwork, the challenges of design in free software, and his work with Pepper & Carrot. You can join us in the IRC #fsf channel on Freenode to ask him questions as well!
We count on federated social media to keep developing our ethical social experience online, so we asked Pouhiou, co-director of Framasoft, to have a conversation with us about what a program like video sharing platform Peertube can mean for the future, and the importance and challenges of moderating a server.
We will also be joined by Eda Nano, board member at April in France, who can elaborate on developments of free software in France, and talk about collaboration between organizations.
A segment focusing on the challenges and successes of local free software activism worldwide will welcome organizers from free software groups large and small, including long-time LibrePlanet speaker Italo Vignoli from The Document Foundation, located in Italy, and Bonnie Mehring, Free Software Foundation Europe's junior project manager.
Also, be sure to join us for short talks from FSF president Geoffrey Knauth, executive director John Sullivan, and FSF founder Richard Stallman on the last thirty-five years of software freedom, and what the future holds for the FSF.
It is promising to be a fun, educational, and entertaining event. You can join us via fsf.org, and join the conversation with our speakers live through IRC on Freenode in the #fsf channel; we'll make sure we put the link up prominently on our homepage as well. You can also join the online experience by sending in your own video commemorating the occasion, following the instructions on the LibrePlanet wiki.
This birthday celebration is gratis, and all of our speakers are volunteering their time to create a joyous event where we can share our experiences and knowledge together. The LibrePlanet safe space policy will be followed throughout the event, so please make sure you read it. If this online experience is anything like LibrePlanet 2020, we will have a wonderful event, and we can't wait to see everyone online.
Dear Translators:
From FSF
The thirteenth edition of the Free Software Foundation's (FSF) conference on technology and social justice will be held in spring 2021. The Call for Sessions is now open, and will close on October 28th. Potential talks should examine free software through the lens of this year's theme: Empowering Users.
Call for Sessions LP image
Submissions to the Call for Sessions are being accepted through Wednesday, October 28 at 12:00 Eastern Daylight Time (16:00 UTC). General registration, award nominations, exhibitor registration and sponsoring packages will open soon.

Dear Chinese Translators:
Are you interested in having a video conference using Jitsi?
As a valued associate member of the Free Software Foundation (FSF), we are now offering you free "as in freedom" videoconferencing, to help you push back against increased societal pressure to use nonfree software for communicating with collaborators, friends, and loved ones during the COVID-19 pandemic, and after.
Try out our FSF associate member videoconferencing
Only current FSF members can create a channel on the server, but nonmembers are then able to join you. It's a good opportunity to showcase why you are an FSF member!
We have been raising the alarm about encroachments upon user freedom by popular remote communication tools since social distancing guidelines were issued. You might have seen our recent publications warning users about widely used nonfree applications for remote communication and education, like Zoom.
As promised at LibrePlanet 2020, we have formed a working group to document and address major issues facing free software communication platforms, and this project is part of that effort. Another initiative in our free communication toolbox is a collaborative resource page created to steer users to applications that respect them. This will help you and the people you care about to stay away from conferencing tools like Zoom, which requires users to give up their software-related freedoms, and which has been a recent focal point of criticism due to problems ranging from security issues to privacy violations.
The platform we use to offer ethical videoconferencing access is Jitsi Meet. We used it previously to stream and record our annual LibrePlanet conference for an online audience after the COVID-19 pandemic forced us to cancel the in-person event. Choosing Jitsi Meet is only the first step to addressing the problems posed to freedom by services like Zoom and Facebook. Even users that start a call via a server running Jitsi could still be vulnerable if that server depends on or shares information with third parties. The FSF made changes to the code we are running, in order to enhance privacy and software freedom, and published the source code, to motivate others to host their own instances. The FSF instance does not use any third party servers for network initialization, and does not recommend or link to any potentially problematic services.
How to communicate freely with everyone you know
In order to provide a sustainable and reliable service, we are offering the ability to create conversations on the server exclusively to associate members, and it is only intended for personal, noncommercial use. You can create a channel by logging into the server using your member credentials; (your account username is wxie). Any person or group can then participate in the conversation. Nonmembers can be invited, but cannot start a channel.
To use the system, follow these steps:
Go to https://jitsi.member.fsf.org/;
Create a room (for privacy reasons it is better to use something random as a name);
Click on "I am the host" in the modal window to be asked for your membership credentials.
You are now the moderator of the room. Other guests can join using the same URL, without needing to login. For extra privacy, we recommend giving the room a password by clicking on the "i" icon in the bottom right.
best regards,
wxie
