I tried and yes, it seems that the slowdown does disappear after pressing backspace.

When I filed the bug I did not notice that and somehow, even after trying a bit, came to the conclusion that closing and reopening was the only solution.

On my Mac I can experienced the slowdown after returning from the Preamble View, it occurs both for moving the cursor and typing. However the slowdown disappears completely if I press "backspace"  or if I input a TeXmacs command, e.g. "\TeXmacs". Then the speed goes back to normal as far as I can see. Very strange. Maybe understanding the origin of this temporary slowdown will pinpoint also the origin of similar issues (like working with itemise on large documents, which is slower than normal).

I found a quite significant source of poor performance. that on larger document makes working impossible

Reproduced under:
- Windows 10 running official TeXmacs 2.1.2
- Debian Linux (running in WSL) running TeXmacs 2.1.2 SVN13888 from https://build.opensuse.org/project/show/home:slowphil:texmacs-devel

How to reproduce:

- Have a reasonable length document
- Try typing or moving cursor (1)
- Display the preamble
- No need to edit anything
- Close the preamble
- Try typing or moving cursor (2)

The movement in case (2) is much slower than in case (1).

Solutions (choose one):
- Close Texmacs and reopen Texmacs
- Close the document without actually closing Texmacs and reopen document

On smaller files this is not very noticeable but on larger one it becomes impossible to continue working. Attached is an example.
