This is actually something I vaguely plan to fix sometime. SPSS outputs a table with this kind of information as part of most procedures, although it is often hidden. PSPP should be more helpful too.

The best way to find out what how an output was produced is to examine the journal file.

There is no distinct mapping between output files and data files, because:

  • The data may not have come from a file - it could have been input manually or generated from INPUT or another means.

  • The dataset may have been duplicated and then possibly mutated.

  • Datasets can be combined so the output can be a merge, combination or concatenation of two or more data files.

Output do not report the name of the datafile.

Recently, I used multiple data files in PSPP.
I produced many statistics.
I found some incovenience in the produced my own stats.
I wanted to know from which file these output data were produced.
However, the output did not saved the filename of the data file that these stats came from. So, It will be a "heavy" process to find out from which data file such stats were produced.
