@Panxto:
You cannot expect IT depts. to follow what users do next with file associations when installing SW outside the IT dept's control. That is the issue here.

Anyway JohnD's fix should do the job just fine.

@John: After thinking about it, detecting if .m is already a registered file type is the job of the IT service more than Octave's. In this regard, the proposed options would be perfect.

What about adding the following command line options to the installer:

/REGISTER_FILE_TYPES={0|1} - set state of the register file types checbox

/INSTALL_SHORTCUTS={0|1} - set state of the install desktop shortcuts

/INSTALL_ALL_USERS={0|1} - set state of the install all users shortcut

That would also comply to Rik's favorite principle of least surprise.

I think the issue is that .m-file association to the Octave binary being installed is set by default (at least in the installation dialog but probably deeper down). It even affects other Octave installations already present.

Is it possible to invoke some registry call to see if .m file are already associated to some other program (e.g., Matlab or Freemat or ....) and if so don't make the default setting to associate .m to Octave?

Although I guess the additional part of that would be a way to control the value during silent mode

There already is an option checkbox for Register .m file type with Octave

My lab provides an easy way to install Octave on windows systems: without any admin privilege one can use a home made software center to install Octave silently in one click.

An annoying side effect of installing Octave is that .m files are then associated to Octave and people who also use Matlab have to manually change this if they still want Matlab to be the main .m interpreter.

Now comes the request: could there be an option for skipping the file association step? Or even better, could the install script detect if .m is already associated to Matlab and skip the file association step in this case?
