Version 4.2.1 is deprecated and no longer supported.  Please try with the latest stable release which is 5.1.0.  The problem is likely to have been fixed.

The Octave 4.4.1 Windows distribution is now compiled with Qt 5.11. Can someone test whether this is now fixed with Qt 5.11, as suggested in comment #3?

If the problem does not occur in Octave CLI, it may be that this is an issue with Qt. Here's two posts that appeared recently on Debian planet about JAWS and Qt:

The original issue https://blind.guru/qta11y.html
Notice that will be fixed on next Qt version https://blind.guru/qtwin.html

Dear Armeen,

It is impressive to read, that you work with Octave and that a software like JAWS exists.  I tested the JAWS 40 minutes trial version and can confirm, that the command prompt output of Octave GUI is not read back by JAWS.

As a workaround until some updates might eventually fix the situation, you can use Octave CLI (command line interface) for the execution of statements or function files.  The Octave CLI icon usually appears next to the Octave GUI icon when installing Octave 4.2.1.  For me JAWS read back the output of Octave CLI.

But in general as Philip already said, I have no idea why JAWS cannot read back the output inside Octave GUI.  Inside JAWS I didn't find anything to configure what is read by that software.

Does this workaround help you?

Armeen,

Windows 10 has shown to be a moving target. I myself encountered several times that software as well as hardware that once worked fine in Windows 10 stopped working after Win10 feature updates.
Very annoying.

We understand your situation but at the moment we cannot do much about it, sorry.

Hello.  My name is Ameen Ahmed and I am legally blind.  I use a screen reader called Jaws.  I am an applied math major and I use Octave 4.2.1 in the command prompt in my Numerical Analysis class.  I did encountered an accessibility issue with Octave 4.2.1 with Jaws in Windows 10 17-09.  Every time I ran my code through Octave in the command prompt, Jaws does not read back the results and I have to manually have it read the results.  This is very annoying that I have to keep doing that.  Most of the time when I ran my code using Octave in Windows 10 17-03, Jaws reads back the results.  I really don't want to have to revert back to Windows 10 17-03, because I want to have the most up to date operating system.  I know that Octave is not fully tested with Windows 10, but is there going to be a time when Octave is going to be tested fully on Windows 10?  I know that Jaws is a paid software, but you can at least test Jaws in the free 40 minute demo, with Octave in the command prompt and that would be enough to test Jaws with Octave in the command prompt.  I don't know if other users use Octave with a screen reader, but it is at least worth trying Jaws in the free 40 minute demo with Octave in the command prompt.  Any help would be greatly appreciated.
