In the course of performing technical tests on FreeSerif, I later noticed that the FontForge menu item  "Find Problems" -> ATT -> "Check for missing scripts in features" brings up a warning dialog titled

"Missing Script"
-------------------------------
The lookup
'locl' punctuation in Malayala
is active for the glyph danda which has script 'deva', yet this script does not appear in any of the features which apply the lookup

Would you like to add this script to one of those features?
-------------------------------

I don't know if this means that something is still wrong with the font, or if this is some oversight in the problem finding function.

Yeah, it was pretty spotty.
I tried to fix the ones where a special form had been attempted -- not sure if I got everything.

Attached is a sample document with text containing dandas in various Indic scripts.  I think the language of the text is Sanskrit in every case, and as I undrstand it, it is automatically transcribed from some phonetic source.  Nevermind that -- there are dandas in it.

Many of the fonts have localized forms for U+0964 and U+0965 for various Indic scripts. If U+0964 is localized for a particular script, U+0965 should be localized the same way, but some localized forms are missing. For example, in FreeSans Oblique in Bengali, danda becomes bn_fullstop, but dbldanda does not become bn_dbldanda. The full list is:

  • FreeSans Oblique: Bengali
  • FreeSerif: Oriya
  • FreeSerif Italic: Bengali

FreeSans Oblique has a bn_dbldanda glyph but doesn’t use it. FreeSerif Italic has a bn_dbldanda glyph but associates it with U+2016 DOUBLE VERTICAL LINE, which is undesirable as it encourages using U+2016 as the double danda instead of U+0965.
