Such file names are likely not to be portable across systems and thereby raise other problems such as linking between documents. I have not made up my mind yet, but another solution would be to raise an error message whenever the user manipulates file names with dangerous names.

I finally decided that asterisks in file names should be prohibited, so it will be to much effort to do something sensible on our side.
