Thanks for the info on what the request meant originally!

I haven't been working on xboard for years, but I happened to visit the Savannah pages today and drifted into cleaning up some of the open bugs.

I don't see much need for this feature request.  It's not even quite the way I would have implemented something to serve your original need.  So I'm going to close it.  For people who just want to automatically save their games, -sgf does something close, though it doesn't save the game until it's over.

After nine years from creating the request I’m not sure I fully remember the context.

At the time I was developing a javascript based software that could display on a web page a chess game in progress from a PGN on the web server that updates every time a move is made.
If xboard could automatically save a PGN of the game in progress, for example during an engine match, my software could have shown such game in progress on a web page.
Since then, other software developed this feature, for example cutechess-cli is used in such context.

I’m not completely sure but the reference to proprietary formats probably comes from my attempt to extract the information I needed from the xboard debug file and build the PGN of the game in progress with all desired information (clock times, eval) from there. Clearly the debug information is in a proprietary format. However, once alternative options were found in order to have a live PGN of an engine match in progress, at that point I abandoned the idea of processing the xboard debug file.

I don't fully understand this feature request, but maybe I'm just nitpicking...

"as opposed to a proprietary format" -- xboard doesn't save anything in a proprietary format, so I don't know what the feature request mentions this.

Ignoring that part, I guess it could be a nice feature to autosave the game after every move.

Feature request: ability to save games in progress in a local file in PGN format (as opposed to a proprietary format).

Each time a move is made the local PGN file is updated (even more often if clock/thinking info is added as a PGN comment).

Either save plain games or games with additional info as comments, using the PGN comment tags [%info value], such as
1 e4 {[%clk 1:59:59] [%eval 0.1]}
