I mailed a sequence of patches to -email is unavailable- which largely fix this.

We can get more performance still out of this, but that will require further data representation changes, so I'd prefer to do those in a subsequent patch.

The bugfix (well, workaround) for bug #18466 imposes a performance penalty (by restricting the number of arguments that "-execdir ... {} +" will use to 1).
