Ah, interesting.  That lends support to the existing hyphenation flags, fortunately.

Also, that commit was reverted so there's no trace of the invalid claim in the Changelog or anywhere outside of git history and things that copied it (like the git-commit mailing list) now.

The example "an-befall-a" in the commit

a4158bd0ed730bdea36996aa4f06221c09b2ec6a
("tmac/sv.tmac: Set hyphenation flags to 48")

is a misprint.

The web site "svenska.se" shows for the three examples:

an|be·falla, just·er·bar, and o|vän·lig

Yes, I was going to open a separate issue for it--definitely wishlist.

Your suggestion sounds sensible.  However, I think this isn't something urgent.  Perhaps it makes sense to open a wishlist issue.

3 requests or 3 registers, I should say.

My concern is less with the mechanism we use to store these things than with (1) the cleanliness of the design with respect to separation of independent variables; and (2) the ergonomic/mnemonic accessibility of the interface to the user.

"The only odd number that is valid is 1."

Yes, that is pretty confusing.  "1" is implied in all hyphenation flag values that are not 0.  If I understand correctly.

There is definitely some technical debt here, with some bit flags turning features on and others turning features off.  Unfortunately the semantics of the default (1) appear to leave us little choice.

I suppose .hy should really be split into 3 requests; 2 matching the TeX approach (left-hyphen-min and right-hyphen-min) and 1 for orphans.

.hyleftmin
.hyrightmin
.hyorphan

maybe?

Bjarni, we're maintaining congruence with the TeX hyphenation patterns as a design decision for the time being.  I think it's a good choice as we don't seem to have the resources to maintain our own.

Given that, the case for wrongness of the TeX hyphenation patterns should be taken to TeX upstream.

Not hyphenating a word at the end of a page or column appears to be a document-design choice we leave to document or macro package authors.

Reopening per Werner at <https://lists.gnu.org/archive/html/groff/2018-11/msg00071.html>.

The new fix will just be .hy 33 -> .hy 32.

It should be (+2), not (+4)!

The only odd number that is valid is 1.

The number 32 (+4) is the best choice as the hyphenation patterns show, that a vocal at the beginning of a word may be split off.
