Closing, as the "bug" is probably due to a lack of --nowrap.

Maybe we should urge distros to set nowrap in /etc/nanorc?  Or instead consider making nowrap the default (when called as 'nano' and only use wrap by default when called as 'pico')?

Are you using -w or --nowrap on the command line? Nano lets you set or unset this option several different ways.

When editing the end of a long line in a text file, nano often breaks the line, without the user pressing enter. While breaking the line for display purposes may be okay, actually inserting a line end without the user pressing "Enter" is unacceptable. This behavior is especially problematic when editing bash scripts, as it causes the new line to be interpreted as a new command. In my personal experience, it has caused many of my scripts to fail, forcing me to go back and remove the spurious line breaks.

The correct behavior would be for nano to only enter line breaks when the user presses "Enter."
