With the patch applied, the conversation function will be
unable to return user names (which are usually requested with
the echo turned on).

The PAM module in auth/pam.c improperly implements the conversation function. It returns the username instead of the password if echo is turned on. Normally, a PAM module request echo on if it is using a challenge/response authentication method. This of course fails because the PAM module receives the username instead of the challenge response.

Here's a patch to pam.c. It's prety trivial:
