This has been fixed in CVS which will be in the 0.70 release. Mandatory options are now checked and the error messages have been gone over.

In your example above you need to also specify the name of the location you want to extract to. e.g.:

iso-read -i a.iso -e foo -o foo

If I have understood the purpose of iso-read correctly, the -e argument is supposed to be mandatory. In 0.69 it can be omitted, something which results in a rather unintelligible error message:

Could not get ISO-9660 file information for file (null)

Even when the argument is passed, the utility seems to fail, but I haven't investigated this in detail:

$ mkisofs -o a.iso foo
$ iso-read -i a.iso -e foo
Could not get ISO-9660 file information for file foo
