Hi.

You should prefer to use the mailing list or IRC channel for support help; this area's for bug reports (and this one should remain closed as it's a different issue, and the reporter failed to demonstrate the bug).

The situation you describe is common when screen has been lied to about what sequence of characters represents the "up arrow". This usually either means that it was told that it's running under a term that's different from the one it's actually running under, or else the terminfo database description for that terminal is incorrect.

In order to help us solve that issue, please find out what the value of the TERM environment variable that screen has seen is: to get that, try

C-a : echo $TERM
and
C-a : dinfo

To find out what the terminal database definition for that terminal is, type

infocmp TERM

in your shell, where TERM is the value you got from

C-a : echo $TERM

Please use the support mailing list -unavailable- for further help on this.

this happens to me in vim 7.0.237 inside screen 4.0.3

this does not occur at the shell inside screen, where up arrow works fine. this does not occur in vim when not running screen.

not sure how to identify the term; however, i have tried setting screen's term to vt100 and ansi, without any change in behavior. (:term vt100 , :term ansi).

Closing this bug, as the requested information was not provided (regarding the settings of TERM, and such). This symptom is almost certainly a result of a misconfiguration (bad TERM setting or terminfo database information), rather than a bug in screen.

If further information becomes available, please feel free to reopen.

According to the screen documentation, up-arrow is sending a \033OA as per the ANSI character sequence for up-arrow.

Perhaps you need to modify your terminal type? Is matlab expecting a vt100?

Set the TERM type (inside the screen window) to "vt100" if it isn't already. See what it is first, and see if running matlab in the predefined terminal type generates the problem you are seeing.

I suspect the TERM variable is set to "ansi" and you need "vt100".

These sequences are explained in the PDF (Info) documentation in section 11.2 (page 48) "Input Translation".
