We would like to have this in GRUB 2. Please, can you try adapting your patch for that? Ideally, what we'd want is an implementation that is binary compatible with gettext.

Btw, unicode support is already present (in gfxterm).

I wonder if you've seen the grub of suse 9.1.
It has a gfxboot patch which switches to 640x480 256 colors
mode, it is programmable in postscript and hence you can
do nearly whatever you want. E.g. the suse folks created a
boot screen with i18n and utf-8 support. Nice, colorful,
able to have japanese/chinese html help text or the name
of the boot entries can be translated, the lanaguage can be
changed on the fly... Do you need more? :-)

I don't really think it is worth bothering with i18n of the
text interface due to the tight limitations of the vga mode.
If you need chinese characters, some graphical mode is the
way to go IMHO.

Two Bytes Language Is Supported by Grub now!

After 9 days's hard work, I came to this point; and want to share the good news with savannah's friends.

It is only an attempt for me to let a boot manager to has non-english supported.

But it has some limitations. I wish, grub version 2.0 would have unicode support.
