I can't reproduce the problem in the POSIX locale (i.e.,
LC_ALL="C" in the environment). Most likely this was just an issue in your locale. See "sort --help" for more.

Using a FILE that contains this:

aa1
a-a2
aa3
aa2

do:

sort FILE

and the results are:

aa1
aa2
a-a2
aa3

This is incorrect. The results should be:

a-a2
aa1
aa2
aa3

If you remove the trailing numbers, it sorts correctly. You can change the '-' to be any other symbol (I tried '=' and '&') and you get the same results.
