This bug has been fixed in CVS: the --devices option now works.
Best way to avoid ever hanging on fifos again is probably to define the environment variable GREP_OPTIONS="-Dskip".

Yes, it should! It's very annoying to see it silently stall because of a fifo. (Tip: do a "echo > offending_fifo" to recover.)
I came here just to submit that feature request, when I saw it's already there. So, here's my "me too!".
