I have an embedded PC that I'm configuring using Linux. The primary data storage device is a 256MB Compact Flash card on /dev/hda. For development purposes I also have a hard drive installed and it is listed as /dev/hdc (as well as am IDE CD-ROM drive as the slabe to the hard drive). I had a working knoppix image on my CF device, and I just installed RedHat 9 to the hard drive. The installer knew that I was installing RH9 on /dev/hdc but somehow the bootloader on the compact flash card (/dev/hda) got blown away.

I had the same thing happen in the other direction last week, when I had my hard drive on /dev/hda and the CF card on /dev/hdc and attempted to do a grub-install to the CF card. It toasted the MBR on the /dev/hda hard drive.

How can I get GRUB to install completely to /dev/hdc?

I'm a former LILO man, trying to make the switch to GRUB, and it's not going so good.... I haven't figured out how to restore the old GRUB config to that hard drive, so it will load the proper menu.lst file. It now comes up with the GBUB command prompt and I have to manually type: "config /grub/menu.lst" and then my old options are there.

I looked at the previous 86 items on the list, but didn't see anything specific to installing to a secondary drive's MBR. BTW, I control which drive boots via the BIOS which lets me select HD priority.
