This kind of strange thing very often happens with USB systems, and it's not related to GRUB in many cases. Sometimes "dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/sda" then partitioning with fdisk makes things better. I don't know why, though.

Grub version 0.94 on an Compaq Evo N600C.

I installed grub on a USB memory stick (a.k.a disk-on-key) and on a regular floppy.

When booting from either the USB stick or from the floppy (with the USB stick inserted prior to the boot), Grub reports some disk information I don't understand

My regular hard-drive is reported as hd2 instead of hd0. I can understand that since the USB stick presents itself as a hard drive and I have 'booting from USB drive' enabled in the BIOS. I don't understand though why the internal drive is mapped to hd2 not hd1. But that's not the problem.

Grub also seems to report the USB stick as hd0. So far so good.

What is strange is that Grub reports very strange partition information about the USB stick.

I have formatted it with one partition, which has the type 0x0E. This is FAT16 LBA

Grub however reports TWO partitions with following types
hd0,1: type 0xbe
hd0,3: type 0x4f

instead of just one with hd0,0: type 0x0e

Once I have booted Linux, Grub reports the correct partition information regarding the USB stick.

Any idea?
