I am closing this bug since dynamic compilation now works on ia64

I checked on merulo, static linking does fail there, too.

For (2) : If you send me patch for configure.in I can test
on merulo

It seems that the provided configure.log correctly tested that "-ldl -lltdl" was needed for linking statically.

I see two possible explanations:

1. Texmacs can be statically linked on merulo, but not on the debian build system for some reason yet to be discovered. That's what I think is going on.

2. Or, the explicit "-ldl" option messes things up. That would be surprising, but fixable by checking if linking statically with "-lltdl" works before testing linking with "-ldl -lltdl".

Also, it seems tha libc used to build guile there is not the same as the libc texmacs is being compiled for:

/usr/lib/gcc-lib/ia64-linux/3.3.3/../../../libguile-ltdl.a(guile-ltdl.o)(.text+0xba2): In function `sys_dl_open':
: warning: Using 'dlopen' in statically linked applications requires at runtime the shared libraries from the glibc version used for linking

But that is probably not the case on the debian build system.

That's weird. The configure script does check which extra flags are needed to link statically against GUILE (libltdl is used by guile). It check for "no flags", "-ldl", and "-ldl -lltdl".

Probably something wrong is going in that part. Could you attach the configure.log?

Compilation of static texmacs with gcc-3.3 needs the extra
compilation flag "LDBSTATIC=-lltdl". On alpha, which is the
other architecture for which I compile a static texmacs, this
option is not needed.

I'll look into putting this in the configure.in as soon as
I have some time.
