The TeXmacs behaviour is indeed different from TeX/LaTeX, and some people might wish TeXmacs to automatically correct the ponctuation. This might be a user preference, but we indeed have to think about it again at a certain point.

I fear this would confuse many people. Maybe an option to remove multiple spaces from the whole document?

I'm really convinced that spaces (be it spacebar spaces or newlines) further than the first should be entered explicitly using the corresponding menu items or tags.
It makes a lot easier the editing of documents not to have to care for the accidental double space. TeXmacs should do that for you.
If this is not the standard behaviour (and it should, in my view) at least, it should be settable in the preferences the same way pairing of delimiters is.
One could allocate S-space or S-return to protected spaces and newlines.
