We've moved to GRUB 2 as a development platform. Please can you check if this bug still applies there, and if it does, reopen it?

Thanks

Please show the partition table of your disks. Also, it would be helpful to test the same thing on the grub shell running under your OS.

I have two ide disks, grub installed to first MBR.
The command "root (hd1)" gives this error:
Error 18: Selected cylinder exceeds maximum supported by BIOS
Typing this command again and again gives this same reply.
Then once I either type "root (hd1,0)" (replies "Filesystem
type is fat, partition type 0xb"), or simply list partitions
by pressing TAB after "root (hd1," then the next time I type
the "root (hd1)" command it no longer complains about Error
18, it properly answers "Filesystem type is unknown, using
whole disk".

Please tell me if other info is required...
