GNU make does support distributed building, but you need to compile in the optional "customs" library, provided separately. See the README.customs file in the GNU make distribution.

Also, there is a port of GNU make to use the PVM framework but I don't know how current it is.

It would be great to enhance GNU make to have the distributed build capabilities of dmake. I looked into porting our makefiles over to dmake but it's not looking too good.
