We've moved to GRUB 2 as a development platform. Please can you check if this bug still applies there, and if it does, reopen it?

Thanks

Thats right. Happened to me a while ago, too.
The partition couldn't be mounted in Linux and Windows didn't recognize it any more.
So I had to format.

I accidentally typed grub> setup (hd0,0) instead of grub> setup (hd0)

There should be a warning when writting to partitions rather than the MBR. I accidentally did this and now my NTFS partition is foobar.
