I think the real bug is that Octave uses "Courier" as a defult font for gui. This font is horrible.
Since octave already ships FreeSans for its plots/graphics, it could as well include e.g. FreeMono as gui fixed width font.

On linux the Octave Command Window the default font is not drawing some symbols correctly with certain fonts and font sizes. This example shows the long square root symbol. The practical cure is to use a different font, but I thought I had better let you know. Thank you for looking at this.
