Currently the "latex" interpreter doc says:

The "latex" interpreter only works if an external LaTeX tool chain is present. Three binaries are needed: latex, dvipng, and dvisvgm.

and for a while that was sufficient. But now, just installing latex is not enough. I think we should document somewhere, that `latex_standalone" is necessary. Even developers got baffled sometimes:

This seems like an issue that does not need to be addressed directly in Octave's documentation since it is specific to the many different operating systems that Octave might be installed on.

If you install the default Octave package from the distribution, does it install this package?  If so, then there is no problem as users will get it without intervention.  Developers can use something like 'apt-get build-deps' to pull in all the dependencies they need.

Are we documenting which packages are needed for certain features in different distributions (of different operating systems) somewhere?
If we do, which distributions should we care about?

Maybe, documenting required or optional packages is better suited for the Wiki instead of the manual?
E.g., here for Debian/Ubuntu:
https://wiki.octa ... or_Debian_systems

Or should that be completely up to distributors?

Some time ago many linux distributions started packaging "latex_standalone" separately from main "latex" installation.
This package is required for variety of "latex" print formats, but this is not documented neither in Octave docs nor in help.
