Problem solved by switching to software rendering.  Closing report.

Thanks Dmitri,

It may very well be system library problems. I tried printing to svg, but the same gl2ps error occurs. This library seems to provide vector output from OpenGL applications. I thought I could do software based rendering (documentation says it is default for vector formats and I tried the -painters option), bypassing OpenGL, but every time the gl2ps error happens.

I will check out octave.discourse.group.

This is not an octave bug, this is a problem with your system libraries.
As a quick workaround -- try printing to svg and use 3-d party tools to convert to desired format (e.g. Inkscape).

If you need support -- post on octave.discourse.group.

Dmitri.

The print command fails for pdf and eps files with graphics_toolkits("qt") and renderer 'opengl' or 'painters' (printing with graphics_toolkits("gnuplot") works).

My octave installation is with MacPorts and standard variants. There are many library dependencies but some possibly relevant ones used are gl2ps 1.4.2 and ghostscript 10.05.1.

The type of error message I get is:

>> print test.pdf
