I added "!" to the list of shell escape characters.

Not sure if this is a bug. This fails:

make -f- <<< 'x:; ! false'
! false
make: !: Command not found
make: *** [x] Error 127

But this works:

make -f- <<< 'x:; ! false > /dev/null'
! false > /dev/null

The point is that I want to use the ! operator to negate the exit status of the program. This works so long as make forks a subshell, but if make does the fork/exec itself an error occurs.

It seems clear that make should recognize the ! operator as special, requiring a subshell just as it does for redirection.

Or am I confused?
