No more information in about four weeks.

Closing as invalid assuming this is a downstream packaging issue.
If it turns out that this is indeed something that needs to be fixed in Octave, we can re-open this report.

There aren't many macOS users perusing this bug tracker afaict.

Also, I'd guess that this might be a packaging or installation issue? Maybe some incompatible libraries are mixed together?

You'll probably have more luck asking homebrew about the issues you are seeing.

If it turns out this is caused by a bug in Octave, please report back here.

Thanks for the reply. Yes a homebrewed version. I tried those two commands again and one or two things happened with upgrade but no change in the behaviour of octave, even after subsequently running brew reinstall octave. Any thoughts on where to go next?
