Space between staffs is now handled automatically unless the user fixes it.

There is a new feature for this case: click on the flag at the start of the staff and choose

(Display) Reset Staff Height

it would be nice if this could be done automatically...

I notice that the spacing does revert if I close and reopen the file.

If I mistakenly press the octave key, the staff is moved further away to accomodate the low note. When I delete the wrong note, it would be nice if the staff spacing reverted to what it was before.
