I don't know whether it is the same problem, but I have encountered similar (BSOD) problems when exiting gnubg with sounds enabled (W98SE). The "exit" sound stopped in a loop and I had to reboot. Since I have switched the sounds off, the problem have never occurred again.

Prior to this incident, gnubg was being run at the same time as Outlook Express. I exited from OE without any apparent problem and then tried to exit from gnubg.

When I tried to exit gnubg I got a blue screen with the following report:
An exception 0E has occurred at
0028:EBD18C14 in VxD EMU10K1(01)+0000EC14.
This was called from
0028:EBD13CA8 in VxD EMU10K1(01)+0009CA8.
