I close this bug, since it duplicates bug #60931.

I added a pointer there to the present bug for reference.

I have just recompiled source code from guile-3 branch with addition of --disable-qtpipes flag in configure and substitution

#ifndef QTTEXMACS  ->  #if !(defined (QTTEXMACS) && defined (QTPIPES))

in socket_notifier.cpp as you suggested in https://savannah.gnu.org/bugs/?60931#comment4. Both sessions and spell checking are now working. Great!

Thank you very much!

I confirm that the spell checking leads to a failure too. Here is the debug message

I have been using both workarounds you suggested already (by the way here is more appropriate link to the forum http://forum.texmacs.cn/t/texmacs-on-debian-11-bullseye/574). The “static texmacs build” has some problem with big memory consumption without reason. AppImage version is better. No crushes, no big memory consumption, check spelling works. Sessions works, but not the Maxima session, which reports

Maxima encountered a Lisp error:

Condition in LOAD [or a callee]: INTERNAL-SIMPLE-PARSE-ERROR: "/tmp/.mount_texmacJkUoFg/usr//share/TeXmacs/plugins/maxima/lisp/texmacs-maxima.lisp" is not a valid pathname on host NIL

Automatically continuing.
To enable the Lisp debugger set debugger-hook to nil.

Error:
Fast links are on: do (si::use-fast-links nil) for debugging
Signalled by LOAD.
Condition in LOAD [or a callee]: INTERNAL-SIMPLE-ERROR: The tag RETURN-FROM-DEBUGGER is undefined.

Broken at LOAD.  Type :H for Help.
    1  Maxima top-level
    2  Maxima top-level
    3  Return to top level.

But in the static texmacs buld all sessions are working including the Maxima session.

Although it's triggered differently, this is a duplicate of bug #60931, as it arises from the same calling of QProcess::start.

As explained in the other bug, it's actually a bug in Qt 5.15 shipped with recent Debians and Ubuntus. It would affect shared library builds in any Linux distro using Qt 5.15. I don't know if it would also affect MacOs and Windows versions built with Qt 5.15.

As noted in http://forum.texmacs.cn/t/sessions-in-ubuntu-21-04/476, a workaround is to use the static texmacs build (or an AppImage) that incorporate Qt 4.8 libraries.

A fix would be to detect at build time when the OS Qt version is 5.15 and then not to rely on Qt for launching external processes.

First of all thanks to developers and contributors for such a fantastic piece of software!

Recently I have successfully compiled and built from source code this   https://github.com/texmacs/texmacs/tree/guile3_branch_2.1 version on freshly installed Debian 11 bullseye (stable release). It works fine, except for interactive sessions. For example, when I trying to launch an interactive Reduce session, texmacs instantly crashes and prints

TeXmacs] debug-shell, Launching 'tm_reduce'

Very similar behavior is observed for Assymptote, Graphviz, DraTex, Feynmf, FriCAS, Giac, Gnuplot, Graph, Maxima, Pari, Python, R, Reduce, Sage, Shell, SymPy, TikZ, and XYpic sessions. Scheme is the only session that works.

Also, this behavior is very similar to that observed here http://forum.texmacs.cn/t/sessions-in-ubuntu-21-04/476, though there eventually it was an another version (not guile 3).
