In the "Draw image.." mode, if a figure is drawn away from the center of the canvas, and then cropped, the resulting drawing has excess whitespace. This does not occur if the drawing is made towards the center part of the canvas.

This is actually not a bug but a (counterintuitive) feature.
The point is that images are inline elements that need to be positioned vertically with respect to neighbouring text. In my implementation, the cropping did not have any effect on the vertical positioning, so an image that you positioned far above the baseline would still appear far above the baseline (hence the whitespace).
In my new implementation, I prevent excess vertical positioning when the image is entirely above or below the baseline.
