That looks like an encoding error to me.
Either the file is saved with a wrong encoding or Octave tries to read it with the wrong encoding.

What do the following commands return for you?

(most likely) bug #60882
GNU Octave is showing error for any valid script. A certain script was working fine earlier today. Now the same script shows error. The following is a simple example:

script: (saved as a.m in C:\Users\HP\)

x1 = [1, 2, 3];
x2 = [4, 5, 6];
y = x1 + x2

>> a

error: parse error near line 1 of file C:\Users\HP\a.m

  syntax error
