The library used to find audio devices is called portaudio. The portaudio project may be able to suggest what is missing that means it doesn't find any audio devices.

Hello, I am as well getting that error. Saying that Audio Backend and Midi are Unknown. And in the Change Preferences view the only option for 'Audio backend' and 'MIDI backend' is 'none' (I do not have the option 'default'). Did anybody resolve issue? Do we have to manually install anything for that?

I am using Manjaro with Denemo 2.6.19

Oh, I meant to say that when you wrote

"choose a specific audio output device from the drop down list, only NONE is dropped."

I didn't understand - you should get a list with all the devices known to Alsa, and default, but you should always choose default unless you have some special intent.

There is now a warning not to change

Edit-> Change Preferences-> Audio->Audio Output Device

unless you have a special reason.

Choosing a particular output device results in the output library trying to gain exclusive access to the device. Instead set this field to the value "default" (without the quotes!).

If needed, use alsamixer to set your audio output default to the device you want to use.

I have a USB device for the sound output and from time to time the operating system loses its connection to it - when I look at the list of audio hardware, only the internal soundcard is listed. When this happens I have to re-boot and then the USB card is found again. This is a bug in my setup, though, not in Denemo.

Hello, sorry my bad English.
I have the same problem (gentoo, denemo 2.5). When I call Edit-> Change Preferences-> Audio and choose a specific audio output device from the drop down list, only NONE is dropped. Audacity and music players (qmmp alsaplayer) are working. I don't have Pulseaudio, only Alsa.

There was a bug with the default audio in versions before 2.5 - you have version 2.4.
However I'm not sure your symptoms match - does Audacity work on you system? The point being that it is not Denemo that chooses the default audio but the portaudio library, used by many programs...

If you want to experiment with your currently installed Denemo you can go to Edit->Change Preferences->Audio and choose a specific audio output device from the drop down list. However, on version 2.4 you can't effectively choose "default" which will mean that Denemo hogs the audio out, preventing other programs from using it.
Please report back if you install version 2.5 or otherwise make progress.

Arch, GNOME 40, pipewire/pulse/alsa.

No audio playback at all, this is the start log.

I've checked for similar errors but nothing comes up, maybe because you support more than two audio drivers?

Last time I tried using this program (12 years ago) I had the same problem.

Maybe we miss some dependencies in the package? could you help?
