Can I reliably reproduce this appstore warning?

  • I have tested this on two other Win10 machines: And NO, I do never see this "App store notification".

  • On my Win10 laptop (as used in comment #0): Yes, I get this message every single time when I start the Octave installer. I will attach a screenshot of it.

So this might be some "weired" configuration of my laptop where I observed this first.

Searching the internet for information on this, I found: https://winaero.com/blog/disable-look-for-an-app-in-the-store-in-windows-10-and-windows-8/

This explains that "Every time you open a file which does not have an application registered to open it, Windows 10 and Windows 8 offer you to open the Windows Store and look for an app there." This seems a funny explanation for opening an exe file (as the Octave installer file). And maybe it has a different reason in my case.

I would be fine with CLOSEing this bug report fully. If someone misconfigures his Windows installation (has I might have done) so it does not find an "App" to execute exe-files, then that's his own trouble.

@Kai: I opened bug #57649 for the signed installer.

An appstore message did not annoy me neither on my test system.  But I am not a "native" Windows user...

Just to keep track of the progress.  Thanks to John D. (comment #2) two items of the OP are fixed:

@Hartmut: Can you "reliably" reproduce this appstore warning?

@Markus: I have no idea about signing those installers.  But even if we did, some users complained about their Malware-Overdetection-Tools to see a Virus in the Octave installer.  Would you like to open a separate bug report about this?

For the first 2 points of the initial comment, I have pushed up the following changes:

I don't remember having seen an appstore message. I do remember having seen a message telling me that the file I was about to execute was not signed. The message was quite explicit that the user should NOT trust unsigned executables downloaded from the internet. I don't remember the exact wording though.

I no longer see that message when I try to use the same installer again. So the systems seems to have remembered my previous decision to trust the installer.

I haven't looked into how exactly the installer would be signed. But I suppose we don't have access to a key that would be trusted by the Windows OS anyway. Do we?

The first two are easy enough to change, so I will do that.

I have tested the 5.1.90 release candidate (from alpha.gnu.org) on Windows 10. Here are some observations that I think are specific to the MXE version of Octave:

  • README: The installer finishes with showing the file README.html. In this file there is a weblink to "Octave-Forge". Currently this points to  "https://octave.sourceforge.net/" which seems to be a dead link. When I change this from ".net" to ".io" the link works fine.

  • COPYRIGHT FILE PROPERTY: The exe installer file itself has Windows file properties. You can see those by right clicking on the installer exe file and select "properties" from the context menu in Windows. And in these file properties the "Copyright" property still has the string "Copyright (C) 2013-2018 John W. Eaton...". Maybe this should be adadpted to the year 2020 now.

  • WINDOWS APP STORE WARNING: When I double-click on this exe installer file, Windows 10 shows me a big warning dialog to start with "Search App in App-Store? You must install an App for this task. Would you like to search for it in the Store?" (own translation from german Windows version) Is there a way to circumvent this weired dialog? (When I click "No" then everything works fine with this Octave installer. But I do not get this warning when installing other software in Windodws.)
