The issues reported by Lars and Philip (here and in bug #57226) were caused by a recent change in the editor's closing behavior. Therefore, fixing them most probably not fixes a bug showing up in 4.4.1 and we are back to comment #1 in this thread.

However, my questions to Jatin regarding the orig. submission have not been answered yet and I still do not know exactly what the problem might be.
Therefore, I am closing the report as fixed. It will be reopened once Jatin reports back and the issue in 4.4.1 can still be reproduced in 5.1. or 6.1.

The problem I experienced (comment #2, Editor always invisible on startup) is fixed now.

Is this still an issue now that bug #57226 has been resolved?  Also, bumping the Release to "dev".  Version 4.4.1 has not been supported in ages.  It makes sense only to fix issues for 5.1 or 6.1.

Still some other observations which might help to locate the problem:

After making the Editor visible again

- Size and position of an undocked Editor window are persistent

- Location of a docked widget is persistent

- Size of the docked widget is not persistent

I can confirm that the editor is now closed before other widgets. However, on my system, it is still visible after a restart. There might be some glitches in the timing which leads to different effects on different systems.

To me, it looks like when the gui closes, it first closes the editor, this  sets FileEditorVisible=false which is then written to octave.ini.

@Torsten:
I've entered a new bug report for my issues (that I could reproduce, contrary to my comment #5). See bug #57226.

@Torsten:
I'll retract my comment #5; what I saw seems to be caused by mixing up various Octave versions on one and the same pc. I suppose version 6.0.0 has a different octave.ini between Oct. 17 and Nov. 2.

I see, OP is on 4.4.1...

But this is how I can trigger the problem on current dev:

Delete the ~/.config/octave folder

Start octave, the editor is tabbed in a pane together with command, variable editor and documentation widgets and it keeps ok like this after every restart.

Problem starts once you move the editor to its own pane.

When octave is closed then it is shortly visible, that the editor pane is closed before all the others.

After restarting octave the editor now stays closed, even if it is moved back into its original position in a tab of the pane with command, doc, etc.

This is a diff between the initial octave.ini, created after a first run and the .ini after only having moved the editor to its own pane:

Philip, Lars, it seems that the issue that you are describing is not related to the OP, since it appeared only recently with the current dev branch.

Since I am not able to reproduce this issue on my system, could you please post the relevant lines of the gui preferences file (section "DockWidgets", key beginning with "FileEditor...") for the cases where the editor does not reopen at the expected position?

Maybe related:
I have a dual monitor setup, the GUI editor is usually on the right screen, with a tiny bit of the left edge on the left screen (to be able to grab it when the right screen is lacking, i.e., when switching to working remotely).
Until a while ago, when I closed the undocked editor using the Close button, the next time I opened the editor it would appear exactly at the previous location.
But recently it appears in the top left corner of my main (left) screen and at a small size (lines maybe 40 chars wide, height maybe 20 lines).
Apparently when closing the editor the position is reset to a default undocked position, rather than saved somewhere for the next time it is opened.

This reminds me of an old bug some years ago with the editor on dual screens and/or high-res monitors.

@Lars: This means, when you close octave while the editor is open, the editor is hidden after next start of octave?

I also experienced recently a change in the GUI/Editor behaviour.
I'm used to have have a docked editor widget, so when starting octave with octave --gui an empty editor widget should be in place. Now it is missing until I open a file or select File-New.

However, unlike the original poster, it appears docked in the right place then.

But I am running current dev on Xubuntu 16.04.

Jatin, thanks for the report.

What do you mean by "it opens separately"? Does it open in a separate floating window? And how to you try to open a new file?

The Editor is not opening with the Command Window like it should. For already saved files, it opens separately, and does not open at all when a new Octave file is opened.
