Thanks, Rik.

I reinstalled Lubuntu 19.04, and then installed Octave via "sudo apt install Octave", and it now works.  It's still the older version (4.4.1), but I'm no longer getting that error.

Thanks for your help and attention, and for responding so quickly.

Version 4.4.1 is very old and no longer supported.  However, I tried running the code on that same version on a 64-bit Kubuntu machine that I have and it runs fine.

Most likely there is something odd about the hardware of your machine, or Lubuntu hasn't compiled and packaged Octave correctly.

Please try the latest stable version (5.1) which is available in a debian file format.

I have installed Octave 4.4.1 on my machine, which is running Lubuntu 19.04.  It's a 64-bit system.  I installed Octave via Lubuntu's software center utility.

When trying to use the bin2dec function, I get the following result:

octave:1> bin2dec('011')
fatal: caught signal Segmentation fault -- stopping myself...
Segmentation fault (core dumped)

I uninstalled and reinstalled Octave, and still get the same result.
