Thank you.  You are right, this is indeed valuable input for someone to further investigate this.

I can't rule that out, and if you look at the screenshots, the last one where Octave is working again, you can actually see the GUI working in the small screen icon at the taskbar.

In the case where the GUI didn't pop up, the small screen icon was only white with a different form factor.

Anyway, it helped delete the qt-settings file, so the answer would be in there. Therefore I have attached the old qt-settings file and the new one, so that they can be compared, in case someone with in-depth knowledge have the time for it.

It might have been that the GUI appeared off-screen. This can occur if you re-arranged your monitor setup and there no longer "is" a monitor where Octave was showing last time.

A relatively easy fix in this case is to right-click the program icon whilst holding the shift key. In the menu select "Move" (might be called differently, it's "Verschieben" in my German version) and hit one of the arrow keys on the keyboard once. You can now use your mouse to move the window on screen.

Thanks. Deleting the user setting folder helped. Thank you very much. Any idea why these settings would be "damaged"?

Okay, so not everything is lost.  But I am no native Windows user, so I start to run out of easy suggestions.

We recently had a similar issue, but the ultimate solution is not clear to me: http://octave.1599824.n4.nabble.com/Octave-doesn-t-lauch-in-Windows-10-td4690952.html

Things you can still try are:

1. Delete the %USERPROFILE%\.config\octave folder and restart the Octave GUI.

2. Try to identify in the task manager, if Octave is trying to launch or just dies before anything is started.

3. Turn off all Anti-Malware products and try to start the Octave GUI.

4. Try to plot in the CLI version, e.g. "plot (1:10)" just to see if there something is triggered to further narrow down the issue.

Yes. The command prompt pops up with the cursor at octave:1>

Alright.  Can you start the CLI (command line interface) version of Octave?

After the installation two icons, GUI and CLI, should have been created.

I have now done 1 and 2. Did not do 2 before. Still the same issue.

Please let me ask for two trivial but with MS Windows problems very effective attempts for fixing the issue:

1. Did you try to fully restart your computer since the problem occurred?

2. Did you try to reinstall Octave?

If none of these worked, we can further try investigate the problem.

The GUI doesn't show up any more. Only the icon in the taskbar. I suspect the problem came with an update with Microsoft Office, as they have change their GUI, but I don't have any proof of that, as I didn't ask for the update. Octave and its GUI have been for working for the last two months since I installed it. Perhaps it has something to do with the vbs script. As I am relative new to Octave (used Matlab before), I don't know if there is any logfile I can pull out, that can be useful.
